About Me

Heather Nelson Profile Image

Heather Nelson

Artist Statement:

I explore the human spirit as it expands and thrives in encounters with the natural world, drawing on Canada's breathtaking forests, foothills, plains as inspiration. My practice is centered on the creation of "person-trees"—hybrid, figurative abstractions inspired by the imagery of Psalm 1. These forms represent the state of being "planted" by streams of living water, serving as metaphors for resilience, nourishment, and spiritual grounding.

My creative process is inherently tactile and rhythmic. Through multi-layered, expressive applications of pigment, I investigate our visceral response to color. By utilizing vibrant palettes, I aim to bridge the gap between ancient symbolism and modern emotion.

In a contemporary landscape often defined by "disposable culture" and rapid consumption, my paintings serve as a counter-narrative. By exploring the delicate balance between beauty and fragility, I invite the viewer to pause. My goal is to disrupt the rush of the everyday, creating a sacred space for quiet reflection, endurance, and joy.

Influences & Style

My work is characterized by movement and density, echoing the layered complexity of the human experience. I am deeply influenced by the sweeping lines and love of nature of Emily Carr, the dreamlike narratives of Marc Chagall, the organic forms of Georgia O’Keeffe, and the "slow art" philosophy and spirituality of contemporary artist Makoto Fujimura.

Professional Background

Beyond the studio, I am a dedicated educator, currently serving as the Art Teacher (Grades 1–12) for BCS@Home. My passion for fostering creativity in the next generation was featured in 2020 on CTV’s Inspired Albertan series with Darrel Janz.

Community & Connection

I have exhibited my work at Art Central, Ambrose University, Rockyview Hospital, and Southview Alliance Church, and my pieces reside in numerous private collections. When I am not painting or teaching, I find my own "living water" through gardening, nature walks, and music—all of which inform the rhythmic vitality of my canvas. I live and work in Alberta, along with my wonderful husband and three children.
